Dr. Blaine Olsen has trained over 50 physicians in the vasectomy procedure since 2008, alongside a two-decade career in family medicine education in Denver. He has performed vasectomies since 2001, when he first trained in the technique during his family medicine residency.
Dr. Olsen earned a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, from Colorado College in 1996, and his medical degree from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 2000. He completed his internship and residency in family medicine at Saint Joseph Hospital Family Medicine Residency in Denver from 2000 to 2003, where he trained in vasectomy.
From 2008 to 2022, Dr. Olsen provided and taught vasectomy procedures through the Jefferson County Department of Health and Environment while on faculty at Saint Joseph Hospital Family Medicine Residency. He has performed hundreds of vasectomies over his career, working across outpatient clinic and hospital-based settings, including as a family medicine hospitalist.
After beginning in private practice at Highlands Family Medicine in Denver (2003–2007), Dr. Olsen moved into academic medicine as a faculty physician at Saint Joseph Hospital Family Medicine Residency, where he later served as Residency Program Director from 2014 to 2019. He has been an Assistant Clinical Professor with the University of Colorado School of Medicine’s Department of Family Medicine since 2016, and has served as Medical Director of Bruner Family Medicine at Uptown Community Health Center since 2021.
Dr. Olsen is a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine, first certified in 2003 and recertified in 2013 and 2023. He has presented on medical education and community-based primary care at national conferences, including the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine and the North American Primary Care Research Group, and was named Saint Joseph Hospital’s Family Medicine Faculty of the Year in 2009.
Dr. Olsen speaks some Spanish and uses a professional interpreter for complex medical conversations.
Dr. Olsen is married with two daughters and a dog. Outside of work, he enjoys trail running, mountain biking, skiing, backpacking, cooking, and gardening, and spends as much time as possible outdoors with his family, camping, backpacking, and skiing together.
