What is the cost of vasectomy?

The cost of vasectomy in Colorado varies greatly depending on what part of the state you are in, whether you have it done in a hospital or doctor’s office and insurance coverage, but generally, the range is from $900 to $3000. For many offices, it will be hard to know how much the charges will end up being, but below is the information we’ve been able to collect:

Total Charge*
Univ of Colorado Ft Collins$976
Colorado Urology$2224
Urology Center of Colorado$1150
Boulder Medical Center$991
Rocky Mtn Urology (Glenwood Springs)$1922
Urologic Associates of Western CO (GJ)$2029
Go Vasectomy$885

“Why does the cost of vasectomy vary so much?” you may ask.  The charges that a doctor’s office has set depend largely on the maximum an insurance company will pay the doctor’s office.  If a high rate of payment has been set, then the doctor’s office will set their charges higher.  Also, the amount of competition they have in their service area will influence the pricing; the less competition there is, the higher the price that will be set.

Here are things to consider when you’re assessing how much your vasectomy will cost:

  • Are you able to get a firm price from the doctor’s office? It’s reassuring when you can get an exact price ahead of time. It will avoid surprises later.
  • If you have insurance, is the doctor in network with your insurance? This may or may not have a significant impact.  It depends on whether you have a deductible, if your deductible has been met and how much of a discount you’ll get with your insurance. It is rare for insurance to cover the entire cost of vasectomy. To get the best information, you’ll need to call your insurance company to see what they will cover and what is included in your policy. You’ll need to know the procedure code (55250 for vasectomy), whether it is being done in the doctor’s office or hospital, and the tax ID number for the doctor or clinic.
  • How are vasectomies scheduled? If you are able to plan it on a Friday or Saturday, you may not need to take any time off work. This may save you on lost wages (and/or save your vacation time for a real vacation).

At Go Vasectomy:

  • We’re known for our transparent pricing; we charge $885 for the procedure, start to finish.  That’s the total amount you’ll pay. It may be less if we are in-network with your insurance.
  • We don’t include the follow-up semen analysis in the pricing, but we recommend a low-cost option ($65) that you perform at home.
  • We schedule procedures on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays so that you are able to use the weekend for recovery and minimize the amount of time off work. Since we use the “No-scalpel” vasectomy, you will only need 1-2 days for recovery. See our After Care Instructions for more information.
  • If you need to discuss this with your insurance, here is the information you’ll need:
    • Our vasectomies are done in the office (not a hospital or surgical center).
    • The procedure code is 55250
    • Our Tax ID is 87-1513347
    • See our insurance information page for more information.

How can Go Vasectomy charge so much less than other doctors? We can do this because:

  • Vasectomy is all we do, so we have efficient processes like on-line scheduling
  • We have a high volume of procedures, so we’re set up to get yours done in a minimum amount of time
  • Since we do a high volume of procedures, our complication rates are low, minimizing the amount of time and money you might spend on complications.
